A Non Resident Bengali (NRB) couple based in Silicon Valley, California and their friends took barely 4.5 days to raise over 10,000 US dollars to provide relief to those affected by Cyclone Amphan in Bengal.
What is special about this initiative is that the two software executives — Arindam Samanta, an IIT, Kharagpur alumnus, and his wife Sanjukta — used only their personal contacts to raise the amount, which was disbursed through the NGOs Kolkata Foundation and Mukti, as well as Ramakrishna Mission, Narendrapur.
The couple had made personalised appeals through social media platforms for crowd funding. Before long, people living both along the East and West Coast of the US had responded.
“We were moved at the sight of the devastation. There was an overwhelming support both from the Probashi Bangali population in the US and others,” said Arindam.
