Fulbari (Jalpaiguri): The West Bengal government has handed over 104 acres to the Bagdogra airport authorities in north Bengal for the airport’s “upgradation and modernization” following the huge rise in passenger traffic. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee allocated the land during the administrative meeting held at Uttarkanya on Wednesday.
“The airport has allowed night landing these days. The upgrade will cater to a couple of states, namely West Bengal and Sikkim, and (also) Bhutan and Nepal,” she said.

The CM handed over a cheque for Rs 5 crore for Rajbangshi Bhasa Academy and a Rs 10 crore cheque for Rajbanshi Development and Culture Board with an eye on Rajbanshi population in north Bengal. She also allotted 50 acres at Mathabhanga to set up a second campus of Panchanan Barma University.

While announcing development projects for north Bengal, Banerjee sent out a word of caution to all superintendents of police and inspectors-in-charge over efforts to spread “misgivings” among people using social media that might lead to riots. “This area is often called the chicken’s neck. It is a very sensitive zone, connecting the Northeast, and has international borders as well. A WhatsApp message can spark a riot in an hour. You should be vigilant against rumour-mongers who are spreading fake and false news to undermine development work,” the CM said without naming the communal agents.

On Wednesday, Banerjee also released a Rs 150 crore grant to Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) for running public services in the Hills. But the CM couldn’t accommodate GTA chairman Anit Thapa’s call for regularizing the contractual staff in GTA. “There are 4,500 vacancies in GTA at present. I would request the CM to arrange for regularization of the contractual staff,” Thapa said in the meeting.
