Calcutta High Court may have the final say on whether adequate measures have been taken by the Bengal administration for a safe Gangasagar Mela this year, but preparati-ons have nonetheless begun for the annual fair on Sagar Island.
The Mela camp was formally inaugurated on Sunday by the government, along with agencies such as the Indian Coast Guard that has already secured the island by deploying equipment and personnel to prevent untoward incidents.
“The fair will continue till January 16 and lakhs of pilgrims from across the country as well as abroad are expected to take the holy dip on Makar Sankranti. The Coast Guard is the national maritime search and rescue coordinator and has stationed hovercraft, high-speed patrol boats and interceptor boats for search and rescue. In addition to these, movement of unidentified vessels towards the island will be under lens,” a senior Coast Guard officer said.
While Coast Guard Dorniers will be involved in sky patrol, members of a lifesaving rapid action team of divers equipped with Gemini boats and specialised gear will monitor the water.
