Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) on Wednesday held its 55th convocation in a hybrid mode, inviting degree-recipients to the campus to receive their certificates.
ISI director Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay talked about how 2020 had been a strange year, when people suffered and economies took a tumble. “During the trying times, the scientific community of the world came together. Data, results, expertise and experiences were shared. We realized the power of technology,” she said.
Soumya Swaminathan, chief guest and chief scientist at WHO, delivered the convocation address, while Peter J Bickel from the University of California was the guest of honour; both attended the event online. Swaminathan said technology was a tool, which could guide people solve problems smoothly. She appealed to students to work on data science, which could extend scientific literacy in the community. “There were 216 degree recipients on the campus and 220 guests,” said dean of studies Debasis Sengupta.
