New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has commissioned its second 500KWHp canal-top solar plant on Bagjola canal near Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town from May 1.
Officials said the solar project seeks to curb evaporation and loss of water from the canal and will prevent waste materials from being dumped in it. “With this, the second 500 KWHp solar plant now starts operating in New Town; the other 500 KWHp capacity canal-top solar plant is already in operation over the link canal near Gate 4 and 5 of Eco Park,” said an official.
Officials said another benefit of setting up the plant on the canal means a large area of urban land for laying solar panels has been saved. “The energy will be used by the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre and any excess will be fed into the power grid for banking,” the official added.

Hidco is also setting up a 120ft tall 180 KWHp solar dome project.

Officials said New Town was declared a ‘solar city’ in 2013 and since then, authorities have been taking up several initiatives to develop the use of renewable energy. These include solar tree projects, rooftop solar panels on government buildings, solar street light poles, floating solar projects, solar benches and solar water pumps. There are 11 operational on-grid solar projects in New Town currently that supply power to the electric grid, including the canal-top project at Eco Park and a floating panel project at Smritibon Park.
As of estimates available till the last week of March, these projects have generated over 36 lakh units of power since they were commissioned. This translates to about 34 lakh tonnes of carbon offset and cost savings of about of Rs 2.5 crore, considering the cost of electricity as Rs 7/kWh. The power generated is used mostly for street and community lighting in several areas of New Town, officials said.
