Kolkata: ‘Radio New Town’, the township’s community radio channel App that the Housing Infrastructrure Development Corporation (Hidco) introduced for residents earlier this year is all set to be a 24 hours broadcasting channel from August 1. The channel presently broadcasts different topics on New Town and performances by residents three hours daily from 6pm to 9pm.
Hidco officials said that the adequate software content is being accumulated as well as planning is being done to expand the present broadcast time to 24 hours a day. “It is a challenging task considering shift duties, content creation, recording and organising live shows. The plan is to have 24 hours broadcasting from August 1,” said a Hidco official.
Officials said that they were trying to reach to a wider audience, as radio is seldom tuned in by listeners in a planned manner, but is being tuned in as per the time that suits the listener. Having a 24 hours broadcasting time like other radio channels on air will help in this.
“The idea of having the internet radio station is to give residents of New Town their cultural talents by doing performances on ‘shruti natak’, story telling, song, dance, play, live telephone talks, recitation, teaching, singing, poetry and the likes. Social messages like measures being taken on dengue prevention, Covid safety protocols and others as well as information on different events are also being communicated through this channel,” said a Hidco official.
The recordings for the daily 24 hours broadcasting will mostly be done in advance by residents but there would also be professional programmes and live shows also in occasions, officials said.
It was during the Covid lockdown last year that Hidco had organised online cultural events from Nazrul Tirtha and Rabindra Tirtha which was shown in social media and online platforms. It was from these initiatives that the Hidco had come up with the idea to have a community radio channel for New Town and a state of the art studio was set up at the fourth floor of Nazrul Tirtha which is equipped with latest equipment for audio and video recording, editing and steaming. ‘Radio New Town’ had started off as an internet radio shown in Facebook page, after which the ‘Radio New Town’ App was introduced on February this year.
“Me and my daughter had done a dance performance which was shown at the radio New Town facebook page during puja last year. It is a wonderful initiative by the authorities to come up with such a community channel. Many children regularly perform which are aired in this channel,”
