Development across the nation has seen a growth in the construction of highrise buildings. The residents of such structures are unable to receive announcements and act upon them as they feel excluded from the rest of the world. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) plans to operate several special drones across the township with speakers fit into them.
The initiative is being undertaken to reach the people living in highrise complexes in New Town so that they can be made aware of the latest happenings like public schemes, vaccination drives, Duare Sarkar, dengue awareness, etc.
NKDA officials told TOI they got feedback from many residents that they could not get announcements made by the communities as they live inside a large gated highrise complex. Even though the announcements were being made on the roads, they were not reaching a wider audience.
The official said that they are planning to operate special drones in localities with high volume speakers so that the announcements could reach all residents living in the highrise complexes. A day-to-day wise schedule, mentioning which information to be made on which day and in which locality will be fed inside the drone.
Currently, the drones’ announcements in residential areas are being made primarily on four issues – Duare Sarkar, Lakshmir Bhandar, COVID vaccination, and generating awareness on following Covid safety protocols and dengue prevention measures. The announcements are made in Bengali and Hindi to reach a wider audience.
The drones won’t just be used for announcement purposes. They would also help keep an eye on the rooftops of buildings to check stagnant water, which can turn into mosquito breeding grounds. Drones can also be used to spray larvacide on Bagjola and its periphery canals to prevent mosquitoes.
The authorities have already set up a drone pad in New Town Action Area II. The setup has servers, high-speed computers, dual screens, and a host of other software and drone accessories. Three drones are already in work and are being operated from the control room.
