The Kolkata chapter of Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI) on Sunday opened a dementia care centre in Siliguri that can be accessed by people in north Bengal and the northeast requiring help and support to manage family members afflicted with cognitive issues. The unit will provide training to caregivers and create awareness on the issue.

“For the past five-six years, we have been getting 15-20 calls from families in north Bengal, who are seeking counselling and other support. There has been a long-standing demand that ARDSI-Kolkata reach out to the larger population in north Bengal who had to come to Kolkata for dementia-related issues. Due to the absence of any sustained activity and support in north Bengal and the northeast, awareness on dementia and other cognitive issues is low. We hope to change that,” said ARDSI-Kolkata secretary Nilanjana Maulik.

Apart from Siliguri, the centre expects to cater to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur and Malda.

The centre will also conduct memory screening and memory clinic camps to assess memory health.
