Mary Ann Gomes, a resident of Dumdum, is the only player from Bengal participating in the Olympiad and representing India’s Team B. She is participating in an Olympiad for the fifth time. While, at the moment, Team A is attending a camp in Chennai, Team B would participate in two camps in the months of June and July. Under the strict supervision of the coach, Mery practices six to eight hours every day. Besides, she is having online discussions with her teammates.

“I am really thankful that the Chess Olympiad is taking place in India this time. During the lockdown, Indian chess has become really popular and with such a big tournament, the chess enthusiasts in the country would be able to see all the big players. This is an amazing opportunity,” said the 32-year-old, who was awarded the title of Woman Grandmaster (WGM) by FIDE in 2008
