What is a zebra crossing? What are the banes of encroachment and should they be removed? Should political meetings slow down traffic? Two sergeants of the Jorabgan Traffic Guard and three school students engaged in a 20-minute game on Sunday afternoon to raise awareness about traffic rules and road safety. The exchange was part of the Tales of The Chitpur Local Art Festival. “Education and counselling is the only way the attitude of people will change. Anybody can pay a Rs 100 fine but it is important to create better civic sense,” said Alok Sanyal, the officer-in-charge of Jorabagan Traffic Guard, as the century-old heritage building hosted a part of the festival. “We are trying to educate and mobilise students of the area through such events and our campus learning centres. It has helped bring down the number of roads deaths in Jorabagan from 31 in 2016 to 19 in 2017,” Sanyal said. He said drink driving, jaywalking and use of cellphones while driving as the top triggers.
