Buses and auto-rickshaws may have designated lanes at the approach to traffic signals that will allow them a lead over private vehicles to help discipline traffic and encourage use of public transport, according to a Calcutta police plan. A Bus Queue Jump Lane will be earmarked for buses and autos while the movement of private vehicles in the adjoining lanes will be stopped 100 metres before the traffic signal. To implement the plan, there will need to be two traffic signals — one for buses and the other for private vehicles. Public vehicles will be given priority so that they are at least 100 metres ahead of private vehicles. The idea is to encourage commuters to avail themselves of public transport. This will also reduce the chances of lane jumping by buses. When buses and autos will know that this lane will give them priority, they will automatically take this lane instead of jumping lanes.
