A cyclist in his 40s died after a truck hit him in Liluah, Howrah, on Sunday morning People of the area gave chase and stopped the truck. They dragged out the driver and thrashed him till cops reached the spot and rescued him, police said The driver has been arrested on the charge of reckless driving and causing death by negligence Around 10am, the man, whose identity is still to be established, was cycling down the road in Kona in the Liluah police station area when the truck hit him from behind, the police said The man was flung in the air on impact and he fell head first on the road, the police quoted witnesses as saying Some people took him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. The truck driver tried to speed away but people, some on two-wheelers, gave chase and managed to stop him, the police said A group of 50-odd people surrounded the truck and dragged out the driver and started thrashing him, the police said. Residents and traders of the area gheraoed the cops demanding police action against reckless drivers. The gherao was lifted after the police assured them to prosecute such drivers.
