With the state government giving much importance in developing inland river water transport, a semi autonomous body would be set up to function under the state transport department that will look after the entire inland water transport related activities.
The proposal to set up an inland water transport wing was recently approved at the state cabinet. A secretary level official would head the wing and the state government would be creating over 130 new posts to set up the wing.
Officials said that the overall idea is to bring all the aspects of inland water transport systems into one umbrella. “The transport department is working on a number of plans to improve inland water transport system. The new wing would help in overall coordination and functioning of water transport,” said an official.
