The New Town book fair, which is falling in its 5th year will be organised at the New Town fair ground from December 21 to January 1. This year, the New Town book fair will be organised together with the New Town fair for the first time. The fair is being organised by NKDA and the New Town Boi Mela Samity.
The fair secretary Kakoli Mitra said that the fair was scheduled to be inaugurated by Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim. Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation mayor Sabyasachi Dutta and other distinguished guests were also scheduled to be present on the occasion.
Urmila Sen, president of New Town Book fair said that already bookings had been received for 50 book stalls and another 15 stalls were slated to come up at the book fair. “There would be about 130 stalls including the commercial stalls of the New Town fair. Last year, about Rs 7.87 lakh of books were sold off and we are expecting a huge footfall this year also,” she said.
The theme of this year’s New Town book fair is the 125th year of the Chicago speech of Swami Vivekananda. The prime attraction of the book fair would be the national poetry festival to be organised in association with Sahitya Akademi at the book fair venue where eminent poets and authors from different states of the country would assemble to have an exchange of literary ideas through recitation of poetry and literary seminars to be organised everyday.
