Several new haunts for revellers in south Kolkata — adjoining the Southern Avenue, Purna Das Road, Sarat Bose Road and the EM Bypass connectors — will see heavy police deployment this New Year.
Special squads of bike-borne cops will be deployed in these zones, police sources said. In addition to regular nighttime patrolling, cops-on-bikes will also keep a tab on potential hotspots. A senior officer said the security step up is an attempt to curb eve-teasing, unruly behaviour, rash driving and drink driving. Special emphasis will be given to stop biker gangs from operating in these areas.
According to the southeast division andthesouth-suburban division officers of Kolkata Police, just like in Park Street, the areas adjoining malls like Acropolis, Quest and the restaurants will see deployment from Friday night itself. “Though we will begin deployment from Friday, we are going to increase our presence in select areas in phases.
“TheNewYear celebrations aresetto begin early this year with the weekend falling barely a couple of days before the first day of the New Year. So, we have decided to keep women cops at all the important stretches. We will deploy cops in both uniform and plain clothes. For each stretch,wewillhavebike-bornestriketeams to negate any attempt to commit offence using bikes,” said an officer, who is partof the policesecurity team deployed at a prominent south Kolkata mall.
Those manning eateries and pubs at Sarat Bose Road and Southern Avenue said they will remain in contact with the management and bouncers.
Sources claimed the decision was taken following the experiences from the previous years where complaints of several “outsiders” trying to barge in to reserved zones were reported Restaurants and bars have been askedtosendhourly updatesof footfalls according to requirement. Cops said any crime against women must be notified.
