A portable cellular network provider, which was installed at the Salt Lake stadium during the U-17 Fifa World Cup in 2017, will now be installed in a much bigger scale at the Kolkata book fair and the Gangasagar Mela. A meeting held by IT department officials with several cellphone operators and tower infrastructure providers discussed how to tackle the problem of mobile tower congestion and call drops at these places and decided on the Cell on Wheels (CoW).
“Cellphone operators and mobile service providers have agreed to this arrangement,” said a government official.
CoW is a movable cellular network provider that sets up mobile network in places that have low signals. “A tower provider will give the CoW to mobile service providers to operate the service. The state will only act as a facilitator to set up this arrangement,” the senior government official said.
Bidhannagar police have been asked to help the tower company instal the CoW at the book fair. For Gangasagar Mela, the South 24 Parganas district administration will work with the tower company and mobile service providers on the issue.
A trial will be conducted by each cell operator in which additional equipment will be installed on the existing poles on the CoW if required.
