Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta will award Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees instead of Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) instead of Fellow Programme in Management on April 6 this year. This will put the institute among the first crop of IIMs to do so.
IIM-Ahmedabad had awarded MBA degrees at a convocation earlier this year. Sources indicated that IIM-Bangalore, too, is following suit.
Decks have been cleared for IIM-C to award degrees and doctorates which were held back till last year despite the passage of the Indian Institutes of Management Bill in both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.
“Every IIM can now award MBA or post-graduate degrees and doctorates instead of diplomas and fellowships. After the Bill was passed in 2017, there was little time to start awarding from 2018. So, we took some time. This year, the IIM-C board of governors has approved the proposal,” a senior IIM-C official told TOI.
IIM-C authorities said they needed time to study the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations about awarding degrees and ensure the institute complied with all norms.
According to the Bill, IIMs can award degrees only after the programmes meet the UGC guidelines. “But this required us to do a lot of groundwork and considerable time was needed. Moreover, before holding the 53rd convocation in April 2018, we were yet to receive the rules, which had to be framed by the HRD ministry. Keeping everything in mind, we postponed the distribution of degrees last year,” a source said.
“MBA and PhD are more accepted worldwide. They are aligned with the international nomenclature of business management degrees. While the market did recognize PGDM from the IIMs to be equivalent, now the confusion, if any, among employers will be settled,” a student said.
A teacher pointed out,“Awarding degrees will definitely add to the prestige in a sense that power to award degrees is now given to IIMs, which are among the most coveted B-Schools in the world.”
Other one-year courses run by IIM-C includes PGP for executives, which is a dedicated course for developing leaders in the manufacturing sector. This is expected to undergo a name change soon.
This year, around 450 students will get MBA and 14 students will be awarded PhD.
