A map of New Town listing all the major tourist attractions of the township along with information about doctor’s chambers, government offices, community parks and bus timings was released on Sunday.
The handy guide will also include timings of recreation centres, stadiums and community markets, a member of the Kolkata Architecture Foundation (KAF) that has prepared the map said.
The tourist attractions that have made it to the map include Eco Park, Mother’s Wax Museum and Kolkata Gate besides hotels, offices and places to eat. The map also lists all major bus stops along with bus routes, upcoming Metro stations and hospitals, said officials of Hidco, which has published the map.
“Foreign tourists often face trouble accessing maps provided by Google and other search engines while on the move. This is where we expect these maps to come in handy,” said Debashis Sen, the chairman-cum-managing director of Hidco said.
The map is printed on two sides. One side has a geographical map of all three sectors of New Town with major thoroughfares, bus stations, Metro stations, important buildings such as hospitals and offices marked with icons.
The other side lists all the attractions at Eco Park — Seven Wonders, Sculpture Garden, Japanese Garden and more. The map also lists the adventure activities at Eco Park such as kayaking, water zorbing and archery, along with their charges. Recreation centres such as the New Town Business Club and the cricket stadium run by the NKDA also feature on the map.
The map will be available at the reception of all major hotels in New Town and also at Eco Park, Nazrul Tirtha and Mother’s Wax Museum for a fee. The price is yet to be decided, officials said.
Abin Chaudhuri of the Kolkata Architecture Foundation said the map will be an important extension of the city itself.
“This is a pocket map that is 3 inches long and 2 inches wide. In a single sheet, one will get information about the entire township,” Chaudhuri said. “If someone is in front of Hidco Bhavan and looks at the map, s/he will get to see restaurants, bars, Metro stations, bus stops, urban parks and public amenities around the place,” he said.
Two members of KAF, Sohomdeep Sinha Roy and Rukmini Mukherjee, worked for around eight months to come up with the map..
