Chess for the youth will get a shot in the arm in the city with a two-day tournament beginning Saturday. The Saturday Club Rapid Rating Youth Chess Championship 2019, co-hosted by the Alekhine Chess Club and sponsored by Ollypop, in association with The Telegraph, will see over 200 budding players aged under 25 from various parts of the state compete.
“We introduced chess in the club two years ago. We want to promote chess among the club members and their kids. This is the first edition of the tournament,” said Amit Agarwal, chess captain at The Saturday Club.
The tournament will be played in the Swiss League format in the T20 mode. Each player will have 20 minutes to make his moves. The countdown will begin the moment a player makes his first move and the time taken for each move will be deducted from the 20 minutes. In case a board is unfinished in the stipulated time, the person who completes his 20 minutes first will lose, irrespective of his position on the board.
“It will be a Fide Rapid Rating event. Several promising players in the circuit will lock horns and it should be an exiting tournament,” said Sou- men Majumdar, the secretary of Alekhine Chess Club.
Diptayan Ghosh, Bengal’s youngest grandmaster, will be among the participants.
Billiards champion Sourav Kothari will attend the opening ceremony on Saturday. The closing ceremony will have Grandmaster Surya Sekhar Ganguly, said organisers.
