The Mamata Banerjee government issued an order on Wednesday night allowing people to quarantine themselves in 30 hotels in the state for a fee.
Under the pay-and-use model, the tariffs will range from Rs 2,000 (all-inclusive) to Rs 7,000 (excluding GST) a night at the hotels earmarked in Calcutta, New Town and Siliguri.
The quarantine will be supervised by a visiting physician or a medical officer.
The establishments include three-star and four-star hotels, accounting for a total of 645 single-occupancy rooms.
The order, issued by secretary to the health department Saumitra Mohan, said the list of 30 was not exhaustive and others with the requisite infrastructure and willingness to offer the quarantine facilities were welcome to submit their offer with the department.
Sources in the government said the decision was taken in the wake of numerous cases of people trying to suppress information about Covid-19 infection possibilities, apparently out of a “fear” of being forcibly quarantined in a staterun healthcare facility.
“Requests have been received by the state government to consider setting up quarantine facilities on a payand-use basis for affording a choice to those willing to pay. Accordingly, considering the growing need for augmenting the existing quarantine facilities, the state government had reached out to the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Eastern India, which has suggested some hotels that are willing to provide quarantine facilities,” the order said.
“Persons seeking to be selfquarantined or upon the recommendation of a registered medical officer could approach any of these hotels to avail this facility,” it added.
