The Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s (KMC) efforts to clean the roads has drawn praise from none other than actor Amitabh Bachchan. In a retweeted video of KMC road-sweeping trucks rolling along Sarat Bose Road, Bachchan wrote: “Wow! This is fantastic…hello Mumbai. Can the authorities do this for us as well”.
The vehicles in the video were pressed into service by the KMC in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak. They are being used to clean and sweep roads and are also spraying disinfectants at a time when manual cleaning has turned difficult due to the lockdown.
The vehicles, called ‘sweeping-cum-washing trucks’ were first bought by the KMC from Germany a few years ago. Now, they are locally manufactured and procured by the KMC. They are fitted with a collecting bucket that collects the trash which is emptied in dump yards.
Some of these vehicles are also fitted with sprinklers that can spray both water and cleaning chemicals. Over the last two days, the KMC has used the trucks on 25-30 roads, including Harish Mukherjee Road, Sarat Bose Road, Chittaranjan Avenue, Alipore Road and JL Nehru Road.
