A city-based non-profit organisation have come up with a unique way of celebrating one’s birthday or anniversary, if it is scheduled during this ongoing lockdown. Their initiative is about how one can donate Rs 3,000, which almost costs for a dinner of four at a plush restaurant, and use that money to feed 100 needy families in the different rural parts of Bengal. Satabdi Das, associated with the organisation, said, “Since the outbreak of the coronavirus and the announcement of the lockdown, we have joined hands with different NGOs to provide food kits to hundreds of poor and needy families in rural Bengal through the donations we are receiving. We have also delivered our food kits comprising rice, potato, salt, oil, dal, soaps and even masks to Darjeeling as well. Now, we thought why not do something different and unique and spread the message that if anyone wants to celebrate their anniversary or birthday, which happens to take place during the lockdown, they can donate Rs 3,000 or more ad we would use that money to feed 100 or more families or are in dire need of essentials. Since, we cannot go out to celebrate our special day, this will be a noble cause through which one can spread happiness in someone’s life.”
This unique service was started by Satabdi and her team two days back and till now, they have received over 10 phone calls from people enquiring about it and willing to donate money on their birthdays. Financial communicator and social worker Mudar Patherya, who is also associated with is cause, said, “We believe that by connecting human misery to happiness, there lies a key in this, and this key can translate into growing donations coming from people who can afford, who can celebrate and smile for the benefit of those who are at the bottom of Bengal’s social and economic pyramid.”
