NKDA launched ‘Re-Green Earth’ initiative on World Environment Day on Friday by planting a sapling, looking to restore the destroyed green cover. The authorities plan to go in for urban greening of vacant plots. “We will plant trees or set up nurseries. The plot owner, forest officials, NGOs and PCB will be involved,” said a Hidco official.
Besides training workers on scientific pruning, officials plan to set up underground steel boxes with percolation spaces so that utility cables and roots don’t get entangled with each other.
Forest minister Rajib Banerjee said 250 to 300 trees fell at Central Parkn in Salt Lake. “We plan to plant new trees as well as transplant 50-100 trees in Central Park,” he said.
