The trials for providing iron-free water to Salt Lake started on Friday. The trials to check the system along with the pipelines will go on for the next few days, but residents of the entire township can start receiving potable water only after a formal inauguration by urban development minister Firhad Hakim sometime soon.
Finally, the VIP township is about to lose the stigma of being supplied with groundwater that clogs the pipelines and leaves those horrid reddish-orange stains in the washrooms.
The water supply system was supposed to be inaugurated in March but the project ran into a lockdown.
A network of reservoirs have been built for storing the surface water generated from the New Town water treatment plant. Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) can now store potable water in these tanks and supply only, and only clean, iron-free surface water.
