While people are taking precautionary measures to protect themselves the seasonal cold and flu during monsoon, the management of the Alipore Zoo is also taking adequate steps to help birds and fishes stay safe this season. Though most inmates are stress-free this season with almost no visitor at the zoo, which also reduces the chances of them getting sick, the authorities are still being extra careful because this is the time when they get infected with a number of fungal infections.
Zoo director Asish Kumar Samanta informed us that the birds’ enclosures and fish tanks are being cleaned on a regular basis. “Besides, we are providing special diets to the birds to boost their immunity,” he added. The food includes seasonal fruits with lots of minerals and vitamins. On the other hand, fishes are given food according to the species and their needs. “Because there is hardly any visitor, we are able to take extra care of the inmates and they are in a happy mood,” said Asish, adding that Babu, the chimpanzee, however, still misses his human friends.
