Brand Mohun Bagan is too strong to be diluted, at least on the football field.
Even though ATK owns a majority stake in the merged entity — henceforth to be knows as ATK Mohun Bagan — it is the Kolkata giants’ legacy that will hold sway on the ground. For starters, the iconic green-and-maroon colour scheme has been retained, and with it, a huge slice of tradition.
On Friday, in the first meeting of the board of directors of ATK Mohun Bagan Private Limited, it was also decided that the Bagan logo — the sailing boat — will be retained but the letters ATK added. This clearly makes business sense, as the new entity, powered by ATK’s funds, will bank heavily on Bagan’s fan base. And the green-and-maroon blend is the essence that will keep the flock together.
The team’s away jersey is set to be green and maroon stripes on red and white.
“We’ve taken some important decisions and all of these were unanimous,” Sanjiv Goenka, principal owner of the entity, who chaired the meeting, told TOI. “This is the beginning of a new chapter. Mohun Bagan is filled with glory and we are humbled to be part of this legacy. We are going to do everything it takes to further this legacy nationally and overseas.”
Sourav Ganguly, Utsav Parekh, Srinjoy Bose, Debashis Dutta, Gautam Ray and Sanjeev Mehra attended the meeting as board directors.
“Fundamentally, we have recognised the legacy that Mohun Bagan represents,” Goenka added. “We’ve honoured the emotions of thousands towards the green-and-maroon.”
Nita Ambani, founder and chairperson of Football Sports Development Limited, expressed her happiness. “We are delighted with the merger of ATK and Mohun Bagan, the two powerhouses of Indian football. I whole-heartedly welcome Mohun Bagan, one of India’s oldest and most renowned clubs, to the Indian Super League and congratulate Sanjiv Goenka for embracing the I-League champions with open arms,” she said
Debashis Dutta, Bagan’s finance secretary, termed it a new dawn for Mohun Bagan. “The past has been glorious and the future will be vibrant,” he said. “In 1998, we had accepted a prefix to the name. So, what is the harm this time?”
ATK Mohun Bagan will play in the Indian Super League and also other competitions they can participate in India. They will also play in the AFC Cup this season.
“We’ll surely give our best shot in both. The team looks very good, the bulk remains the same with some new players. Hopefully, there will be one or two signings soon,” informed Goenka.
The directors also gave their go-ahead for ATK Mohun Bagan soccer schools across the country.
