I will get two Jamai Shashthi treats today – one from kaku (Iman’s father) and another from mashi (Iman’s aunt). I’m really looking forward to both. To mark every special occasion, Iman’s uncle (Shiv Shankar Chakraborty) cooks at her place and I really enjoy his food. I could not buy anything for them because of the lockdown, but their gifts are due.

Ever since my mother passed away, babai has been going out of his way to hold me close. He has planned a gala Jamai Shashthi celebration at our Liluah house and I’m sure it will be no less than what Ma would do. Ours is a joint family and hence, there will be unlimited fun with kakai cooking. I am a pampered child and so is Nilanjan. Besides, we will have one more Jamai Shashthi celebration at my mashir bari, which my sisters are particularly excited about.

What’s on the menu?
While Iman’ father Shankar Chakraborty will conduct the Jamai Shashthi rituals, his brother will make all the arrangements. “Nobody in my family lets me work. It will be an elaborate affair with not just fish and meat, but even sweets like mishti doi and seasonal fruits like mangoes and lychees. Making labra – mixed vegetables cooked in Bengali style – on all special occasions, including weddings and rice ceremonies, is a family tradition. So that will definitely be there,” said Shankar.
