East Bengal Club emerged overall champions in the state athletic championships, which concluded at the SAI Complex ground on Sunday. Mohun Bagan AC and North 24 Parganas DSA finished second and third, respectively.
Mohun Bagan’s Safikul Mondal and Eastern Railway’s Himashree Roy were adjudged the best athletes in men and women’s category, respectively.
On the final day of the competitions, which returned after a gap of two years because of the pandemic, Safikul, clocking 10.5 seconds, beat North 24 Parganas’ Sahabuddin Molla (10.7) and Police SC’s Md Haidar Ali (10.8) to win a closely-fought 100m dash.
Mohun Bagan’s Karunamoy Mahato won the men’s 400m with a new meet record, clocking 47.5 seconds.
Safikul and Karunamoy then teamed up with Prasenjit Koyal and Indrajit Das to win clinch the 400×100 relay for Mohun Bagan AC.
Himashree, on the other hand, won the women’s 100m with a timing of 11.3s, another meet record.
Jaipaiguri DSA’s Shyama Mandal set the other meet record, winning the women’s U-20 400m with a timing of 55.0 seconds.
